Upper gastrointestinal bleeding, defined as bleeding originating from lesions proximal to Treitz's ligament, which separates the duodenum from the jejunum, is a clinical condition with a mortality rate of around 6 to 10%. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is the best method available for proper diagnosis and treatment. Studies of this nature aim to guide healthcare professionals who deal with these patients on a daily basis, whose clinical presentation can vary from simple cases to true medical catastrophes.

Artur Leonel Carneiro, doctor, master's degree in Rehabilitation Sciences, specialist in General Surgery, Oncological Surgery and Bariatric Surgery. Graduated in 1993 from the Faculty of Medicine of UFMG, he works in the areas in which he specialises, in both the public and private sectors, as well as being a Professor of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of UNEC.
