He co-founded a non-profit organization, Transition Basketball of Michigan, using players' love of athletics to inspire them to achieve success in other areas of their lives. As a result of participating in this program, many young men have received athletic and academic scholarships, networked with business and community leaders, and have been motivated to attain higher levels of academic and personal accomplishment. He has also served as vice president of the Michigan Association of School Boards' Board of Directors (MASB). Buchanan served as boys varsity head basketball coach at Southfield Arts & Technology High School.
