They play important roles in many ecosystems, and man depends on their "ecosystem services" like pollination, decomposition and soil formation. Moreover, insects are important food for many birds and other organisms. Recently, alarming results have been published on a decline in insect abundance. Fragmentation and destruction of their habitats are the main reasons. In addition, climate change represents an increasing stress factor for the insect fauna. This book presents selected spotlights on the need for protection within quite different insect groups and habitats: Pollinators in nature and agriculture, wood-decomposing beetles in Nordic coniferous forests, wetland and pond insects, as well as soil-living species and the very specialized guests of ant nests. Major threats are described, and advice is given on practical conservation measures. The text is easy to read and understand for non-biologists, and several chapters are richly illustrated. A considerable rise in general awareness about insects and their importance is needed if we want to have a chance to conserve their diversity. Hopefully, this book will inspire biologists, citizens, and politicians to embrace insects as a self-evident and important part of practical conservation work.
