The objective is to design an information centre for
Pretoria. The tourism industry is studied to serve
as a generator for the design. The site of the Old
Fire Station Building was chosen for both its
potential and its inadequacies. The design
philosophy and approach to create a successful
public space are examined. The progression of the
design from general concept to specific end product
is illustrated. Attention is focused on parts of
the building which is developed in detail. The
study relies on the application of the concepts of
place making through layering, defining and
containing of space, and contrast existing with the
proposed intervention.
