Mary Noailles Murfree, born on January 24, 1850, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and passing away in the same town on July 31, 1922, was an American author who wrote under the pen name Charles Egbert Craddock. She was the daughter of William Law Murfree. Murfree is best known for her novels and short stories, particularly those set in the Appalachian region. Her works often centered on the lives and experiences of rural inhabitants, capturing their struggles and resilience. Influenced by her upbringing in Tennessee, Murfree's writing reflected her intimate understanding of the landscape and people of the area.
