The text offers a quick summary of current clinical guidelines to experienced clinicians while providing a simplified, focused guide to all entry level clinicians.

The book is comprised of six main sections. The first section focuses on Cardiovascular Critical Care and includes five chapters. The second section concentrates on the endocrine system, gastrointestinal system and the liver. Four chapters make up this section. The third section deals with infectious diseases. The most important update to this section is the thirteenth chapter that deals with the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. The next section discusses neurocritical care and includes three chapters while the next section on pulmonary disorders contains two chapters. The last section is a miscellaneous section that includes seven chapters that don t fit into one of the previous categories.

The chapters cover a wide variety of issues and medical conditions seen in the ICU, including sepsis and septic shock, venous thromboembolism, acute heart failure, anaphylaxis, arrhythmias, asthma and COPD exacerbations, pain, infections, pancreatitis and liver failure, stroke, and many more. Each chapter begins with a brief discussion of the disease state followed by drug tables that compare and contrast different treatment regimens, including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug interactions, contraindications, and hepatic/renal dosing. The book contains clinical pearls organized by the top disease states seen in the critical/acute care setting.

This text is a valuable resource for all ICU providers such as nurses, pharmacists, residents, and physicians alike.

Autor

Dr. Lee received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy in 2001. Following graduation, she completed a residency in Clinical Pharmacy Practice at the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in 2002. She is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and serves as an clinical faculty member at University of California San Francisco, University of the Pacific, and University of Southern California Schools of Pharmacy. She has been teaching medical and pharmacy students and residents for over twenty years as a clinical pharmacist in critical care. Her practice interests include pharmacokinetics, critical care medicine, and cardiology. She is currently the Program Manager for Critical Care/Emergency Services at Veterans Affairs Long Beach Healthcare System. She has developed numerous guidelines and protocols that are essential in taking care of critical care patients to the present day. Furthermore, she received a research grant and has beenactively involved in conducting research studies as a principal investigator. She has given several invited presentations at conferences, and has authored many publications in peer-reviewed journals including New England Journal of Medicine and Nephron as a primary and corresponding author.
