Both parties benefited from this mutual arrangement, as missionaries gained souls and slave owners gained a very obedient slave population. With the rise of black consciousness and a renewed emphasis on reparations for slavery, the descendants of slaves have begun to question Christianity's role in slavery, its abuses and oppression.
