February 3, 1811, saw the birth of renowned American journalist, newspaper editor, and politician Horace Greeley in Amherst, New Hampshire. He started the New York Tribune in 1841, and via it, he had a great influence on public opinion in the middle of the 19th century. Greeley utilized his position to promote workers' rights, women's suffrage, and abolitionism as well as other social reforms. Greeley's dedication to progressive causes and his candor on political matters defined his journalistic career. During the American Civil War, he was a fervent opponent of slavery and a Republican Party supporter. The impact of Horace Greeley went beyond his work as a politician and journalist.
