The Handbuch der Diplomatie 1815-1963 (Handbook of Diplomacy 1815-1963) is the first publication to record all the heads of German missions in foreign countries and all the heads of foreign missions in Germany between 1815 und 1963. It covers the diplomatic relations of Germany and the individual German states to almost two hundred other states, from the Congress of Vienna to the end of Konrad Adenauerâ??s chancellorship. This information on bilateral relations is supplemented by naming the diplomats working in multilateral organisations, such as the Deutschen Bund in Frankfurt and NATO. This unique contemporary reference work records the biographical dates and professional details of about 3,600 functionaries: ambassadors, envoys, resident ministers, charge dâ??affaires, diplomatic agents and general consuls. The Handbuch der Diplomatie 1815-1963 is based on numerous sources, including the information recorded in the diplomatic statistics appendex to the "Gothaischer Hofkalender" (Gothaâ??s directory of the German nobility) for the years 1815 to 1932, and various files and lists from the foreign office for the period from 1945 to 1963. The author had access to the archives of both the foreign office and the home office and was able to examine original files, thereby confirming and supplementing the information already present in the existing record. In addition to the records of the foreign ministry the author also had at his disposal personal files reaching back into the 19th century. The main part of the Handbuch der Diplomatie 1815-1963 is arranged alphabetically according to states. Every individual German state which had its own heads of missions in foreign countries is included in the alphabetical register of countries. The chapters on the countries are arranged according to the capital cities in which that state had missions. In the chapter France, for eg., the cities extend from Berlin to Munich and Weimar. The entries on the cities include the names, biographical dates and details of the respective heads of missions, recorded chronologically. In the chapter Germany and the chapters dealing with the individual German states, all German diplomats accredited in foreign countries are recorded. The chapters on other countries record the heads of missions of all countries having missions in Germany. The single, comprehensive index contains all the states included in the chapter on countries, the capital cities, diplomats, contracts refered to, peace treaties and political parties. It allows easy access to the main section through a variety of different search possibilities. The Handbuch der Diplomatie 1815-1963 is a complete and clearly laid out reference work covering German foreign diplomacy and foreign diplomacy in Germany. Recording all the heads of missions between 1815 and 1963, it is a valuable aid for all those involved in research or interested in political history.
