Late one autumn, Aino's father sets off on the road with the other village men. Little Aino doesn't quite understand why. Då vinterkölden smäller i knutarna börjar det höras skrämmande ljud från skogarna i närheten. Familjen är tvungen att lämna hemmet, den egna butiken i byn och Ainas lekstuga. De får så bråttom till tågstationen att Aina nästan inte hinner med. Vid lekstugan möts barnets och den främmande soldatens blickar. Trasdockans hallonröda förkläde blir liggande i snödrivan då Aina flyr.
