This volume gives a comprehensive account of the role of good governance for African development. Major concepts and strategies to enhance good governance in Africa are presented, evaluated and analysed. A new strategy to strengthen governance systems in Africa is outlined. Various national case studies document the wide diversity of country experiences with regard to governance systems. At the level of local government and local development, various case studies show how decentralisation policies and local development strategies can benefit from improved local governance systems. The human rights situation in African countries in relation to social and economic performance is also reviewed, and the implications for development cooperation are discussed. Most important in this Yearbook is also the dimension of strengthening the systems of good governance with regard to resource use and environmental protection. Major initiatives by development institutions and research institutions, as well as important African declarations and statements on the role of good governance in Africa are documented.
In the forthcoming Volume 7 "Empowerment and Economic Development" major empowerment strategies are discussed for specific social groups, especially the vulnerable groups like women and children; the small industrial producers; unskilled labour and the skilled labour force; the neglected segments of society in the former homelands in South Africa; the role of peace-keeping and humanitarian civil society organisations in countries as Somalia and Sudan is also considered.
