His Father Fred William Whitcombe was a Prize Fighter, Bare-knuckle boxing, at Cardiff Docks known locally as Tiger Bay. Along with brother Frank Whitcombe George attended Ninian Park Primary School in Cardiff. George Whitcombe began his football career with local side Grange Albion Football Club in season 1921-1922. George was described as a dogged, hard working right half who could also fill the centre half berth. In Summer 1922 Whitcombe signed for Cardiff City. He spent three years at Ninian Park but following the Welsh Senior Cup tie with Swansea City on the 2nd March 1925, which Cardiff lost 0-4 he was sold to Stockport County.
