Born studied architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating from the school of Architecture in 1922 and earning a masters degree in 1923. Born was an accomplished artist and illustrator as well. He spent a decade collaborating with author Walter Horn to produce the 1979 Plan of St. Gall, which Born illustrated.
