A short review on the past of the educational systems in general and a preview on possible future tendencies demonstrate the development in the architecture of educational buildings. Regarding the methodical reflections, the researches focus on two main trains of thought; the 'inner aspects' like pedagogical methods and their impact on the design of a educational building, and 'outer aspects' like building, campus and setting, including contemporary typologies and designs. The second part is a draft for an extension building of a German university, capable to meet the requirements of modern learning in an architectural and urban point of view. The purpose of this project is to conceive a plan for a new university building that shows how a different educational system could be implemented, and how the conditions, and in further consequence, the educational level at universities could be improved.
