He was President of the Oxford University Conservative Association, and was a contemporary of figures like John Redwood, Robert Jackson, William Waldegrave, Edwina Currie, Stephen Milligan and Gyles Brandreth. He qualified as an accountant in 1974 and joined Price Waterhouse as a chartered accountant.
