Soviet musicologists did truly fine philological work with their excellent editions of important text sources. Since the 1950s, they have published the correspondence and literary works of the great composers of the 19th century as well as the writings of important critics and theorists. For the main part, this volume draws upon these publications, where most of the extensive quotations are to be found. This book contains important texts which had never before been translated into German or English. 19th century Russian music began with Michail Glinka, at a time when the awareness for a national music awoke, and - specifically - with the first performance of his "A Life for the Czars" on November 27, 1836.Die sowjetische Musikwissenschaft hat Vorzügliches geleistet mit philologisch sorgfältig betreuten Editionen der zentralen Quellentexte. Seit den 1950er Jahren sind die Briefwechsel und literarischen Arbeiten der großen Komponisten des 19. Jahrhunderts, die Schriften der bedeutenden Kritiker und Theoretiker im Druck erschienen.Vor allem auf diese Ausgaben stützt sich das Werk; von hier stammt die Mehrzahl der teilweise ausführlichen Zitate. Sie sind auch nach dem Kriterium ausgewählt, wichtige Texte bereitzustellen, die bislang nicht in deutscher oder englischer Übersetzung vorliegen. Das 19. Jahrhundert beginnt in der russischen Musik mit Michail Glinka, zu dem Zeitpunkt, als das Bewußtsein für eine nationale Musikkultur erwacht und öffentlich benannt wird - das heißt konkret mit der Uraufführung des "Leben für den Zaren" am 27.November 1836.
