Born in Piano di Sorrento, Russo started his career at Genoa youths system. In 2005-06 season, he left for Serie C2 side Pergocrema, as Stefano Belussi's backup. In 2006-07 season, he returned to Genoa at Serie B, as backup of Rubinho, Nicola Barasso and Alessio Scarpi; was award no.57 shirt. He also played for the Primavera under-20 team.
