UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service) is a so-called "third-generation (3G)," broadband, packet-based transmission of text, digitized voice, video, and multimedia at data rates up to 2 megabits per second (Mbps) that will offer a consistent set of services to mobile computer and phone users no matter where they are located in the world. More and more frequently traditional data communications technologies such as IP (Internet Protocol) and ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) are deployed in wireless network infrastructures (UMTS). While ATM and most IP books cover very general deployment of the technologies in wireline networks amd UMTS titles often do not address core network issues, there is little information of either the application of IP and ATM to the telecomms industry or the impact of this on circuit-switched networks. This book addresses this problem by focusing on the convergence of these technologies.
