In Brazil, continuing education gained momentum in the 1990s, a period that saw the emergence of several proposals aimed at training teachers in service at different levels of the public education system. In this context, the responsibilities and obligations of education systems regarding the development and implementation of policies to enhance and qualify the teaching profession are officially supported, thus establishing the rights of education professionals to improve themselves through continuous training processes. Based on this context, the overall objective was to analyse whether the continuing education of literacy teachers in the municipality of Humaitá-AM meets the specific demands of each school context. The results revealed that continuing education policies in schools need to be coordinated with other policies, since the problem of learning and building quality in public education requires a variety of actions and interventions beyond continuing education for teachers.
