The designers of optical systems must be able to treat the image quality in order to have parameters which they can control. The field of image quality analysis is concerned with the development of quantitative merit functions which can be used to calculate image quality in user terms from lens design parameters. The most two complete measures of image quality in user terms are the point spread function (PSF), which is the Fourier transform of complex pupil function, and the optical transfer function (OTF), which is the Fourier transform of PSF.

Ali H. Al-Hamdani, is an Ass. Professor at University of Technology, he is the Manager of the Energy & Renewable Energy Technology Centre. Dr. Al- Hamdani has over 70 scientific papers. He is an expert in many areas of applied physics. Dr. Al-Hamdani was Head of Optoelectronics branch. Al-Hamadani has 28 postgraduate students.
