The fabrication and characterization of moleculararchitectures is now a major area of interest ofcontemporary chemistry. Research efforts in thefabrication of molecular architectures of novelproperties have yielded substantial results in manyareas. Certain molecular structures with interestingproperties can now be converted into new functionalconstructs of desired shapes and forms. However, theunique properties, and consequently, the potentialapplications of some of these new moleculararchitectures are not fully known. Polyyne moleculesrepresent an interesting model as functionalmolecular units, which can be converted into newfunctional constructs that can find applications in ahigh technology industry. Computational approach wasused to model the mechanical and electronicproperties of these molecules so that we can gain agood understanding of these properties on the atomicscale. The calculations revealed the intrinsicproperties of these molecules, which are presented inthe context of potential applications. Thefabrication and spectroscopic characterization ofgold-bound single-stranded oligonucleotides is alsodemonstrated in this book. Researchers in the fieldsof nanotechnology, materials science, molecularelectronics, biochemical sensing, gene mapping, molecular recognition and medical diagnostics shouldfind the book useful.
