He organized classes for potential tour guides under the auspices of the Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers of which he became a member in 2005, gaining the Freedom of the City of London in 2006, the first Scottish taxi driver to do so. He became a Burgess of the City of Edinburgh in 2019 and joined the Incorporation of Baxters. After retiring as a cabbie, he continued as a tutor at the Kerlin Taxi School, a position he has held for over twenty years, and where he passes on his knowledge to potential taxi drivers.
