Research into the Early Christian and Byzantine Periods on the Valleys that Reached the Hellespont

This book prepared on Byzantine Coins of Çanakkale Museum includes an evaluation of the coins documented. Covering the Hellespont, the ancient name of the narrow passage between the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Marmara, it is a significant geographic location in the production-consumption and shopping relationships between these two regions as well as between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean regions at the long distance in the Byzantine Period. Written data indicate that this location maintained its importance in the early, middle, and late phases of the Byzantine Period. Due to a paucity of archaeological research on the upper and middle sections of the strait, a project on the Hellespont was set up in 2004. Archaeological surveys were conducted in the lower, middle and upper parts of the strait and in the Gulf of Saros, where data from the Byzantine period are scarce. In parallel with these studies, the Byzantine period artifacts in the Çanakkale Archaeological Museum were also evaluated.

Autor

Ay¿e Çaylak Türker is a professor of early Christian and Byzantine art history at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University. She specialises in material culture from the 2nd to 15th centuries. She wrote her doctoral thesis on ceramic finds from the excavations of the Church of St. Nicholas in Myra. She has also worked as a researcher on the Anaia Excavations, the Kubad Abad Seljuk Palace Excavations, the Antakya Excavations, and the Alanya (Mountainous Cilicia) Archaeological Survey, and has published work on Byzantine artefact groups. In 2005, she conducted a project on Byzantine settlement patterns in the Hellespont region, which was supported by Tübitak for five years. She conducted archaeological surveys in valleys reaching the Hellespont, a project supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey. While conducting these studies, she also worked on documenting and evaluating Byzantine artefacts in the Çanakkale Archaeological Museum. She has published work on the settlement patterns, ceramics, and architectural decorations she identified during these studies.
