Forest Lawn Cemetery was founded in 1906 in Tropico, California, now part of the city of Glendale. Previous publications have emphasized the changes Hubert Eaton made to transform Forest Lawn Cemetery from a typical graveyard into Forest Lawn Memorial-Park. Earlier books ignored the challenges which had to be conquered to create this famous institution. Birth of a Cemetery reveals the never-told-before history of Forest Lawn's early years. It shows the struggles of the early days, the years of conflicts with Hubert Eaton, and how Eaton struggled to make Forest Lawn a viable enterprise. Overcoming the early challenges, Forest Lawn became a part of the fabric of Los Angeles and the region's growth and development.

Autor

John Llewellyn is a third generation Californian and is uniquely positioned to tell the story of Forest Lawn Memorial-Park's early history. During forty-five years with Forest Lawn¿-¿including twenty-three as its chief executive officer as well as being the third and last generation of the family to lead the organization¿. He has seen the organization evolve from domination by Hubert Eaton to an enduring institution. He is currently chairman of the board of directors. He has chaired industry trade associations as well as other non-profit organizations. Llewellyn as served as a director or trustee of more than two dozen organizations, including business, foundation, hospital, museum, and social service organizations as well as being a director of several for-profit companies. A graduate of the University of Redlands, Llewellyn also earned an MBA from the University of Southern California. John and his wife, Carol, live in Pasadena, California, with their dog, Spotless.
