Synthetic polymers and naturally occurring polymers are the two categories of commonly used biomaterials. The former consists of hydrophobic materials, such as the α-hydroxy acid, a family that includes poly lactic-co-glycolic acid and polyanhydrides. Some naturally occurring polymers include complex sugars like hyaluronan and chitosan, and inorganics like hydroxyapatite.
