Appearance of cracks and deformations is a serious problem associated with concrete structures. Bio cementation is a cost-effective, environment friendly method for improving durability and tensile characteristics of these structures. This method involves calcite precipitation by ureolytic bacteria which is responsible for crack healing.There is committed research undertaken by researchers in this area for finding novel ureolytic microorganisms.

Mr. Ravindranatha Rao is currently working as Assistant Professor-selection grade, department of civil engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology. He has worked in the field of biocementation for improving tensile characteristics of concrete. Mr. Suhas S Vokunnaya is currently pursuing his masters in structural engineering at Manipal Institute of Technology.
