Benjamin Logan (1743-1802) was born in Virginia, but as a young man ventured west into the Holston River area. He served in the Virginia Militia in several campaigns against Shawnee and other tribes, including in Lord Dunmore's War. In 1775 he joined a group led by Daniel Boone into central Kentucky. He left Boone's party and founded a fort at St. Asaph's, near modern day Stanford, KY, in Lincoln County.
