The pandemic has generated an exceptional and ideal situation to study aspects of health and the functioning of cognitive processes, including memory. The primary objective of this book is to examine the functioning of autobiographical memory processes from two perspectives. First, to examine and collect the results obtained from the few studies carried out on the functioning of memory during confinement due to Covid-19, including studies on flashbulb memory of shocking events produced during the pandemic, such as the declaration of the state of confinement. It should not be forgotten that the lockdown meant the loss of freedom, separation from friends and family, and a sudden and unforeseen interruption of daily life and activities related to work/studies and leisure time, a complex situation that required a significant process of adaptation. The pandemic not only caused economic uncertainty with substantial repercussions at the professional and social level, but also enhanced feelings of isolation and generated higher levels of anxiety and depression and, ultimately, a reduction in the sense of well-being compared to the prehealth-crisis status.
This book will gather and agree on the conclusions derived from these studies, both in the memory of autobiographical experiences and in the elaborations and perspectives of how the future was perceived in those times of uncertainty. Secondly, we are interested in approaching the question of what impact the pandemic will have on our autobiographical memory in the future. We will ask whether we will use the pandemic as a referent to locate autobiographical memories, whether the memories of that period of our life will be less accessible showing a positivity effect or whether we will bias the memory of the pandemic period to make it more consistent with our current thoughts and behaviors. There is no doubt that Covid-19 is a milestone in our lives that will affect the way we remember our past and the way we envision our future. Examining those ideas is an objective of this book.
