He completed his study in Kiel, Jena and Berlin. There he worked as a coworker of Walther Nernst. Starting from 1915 Eucken held a chair at the Technische Hochschule Breslau, starting from 1930 at the University of Göttingen as a successor of Gustav Tammann. After "the seizure of power" of the National Socialists, Eucken became a member of the NSDAP in 1933 and worked further as a full professor in Göttingen.
