His shock causes a flashback to events in southern India that lead up to meeting her mother, ALINA during which time the first half of the story interchanges with a dream sequence where his dream avatar - also called Nathan - wakes up in a futuristic high-tech prison apartment. He has no memory of his crime he committed and wakes up every morning asking his computerised companion, ALISON, the same question: why is he there? A clue comes from a child outside who begins a telepathic discourse with him. This awful dream causes a depressed Nathan, the assassin, to continue the second half of the story as he goes on a spiritual quest of atonement with another former assassin, SAMSON, cross southern India, followed by an escape to England after another enforced kill job. Twenty-two years later, Nathan is wiser yet still depressed, so Samson attempts to cheer him up at a masked orgy where young lady seduces him.
