Literature suggests that attaining profound anaesthesia in teeth with irreversible pulpitis is a tedious task compared to achieving anaesthesia in healthy mandibular molars. There are alternate methods to control the inconvenience and pain experienced by the subjects during endodontic treatment, which includes the application of supplementary injections like buccal/lingual infiltrations, intraligamentary, intraosseous and intrapulpal injections.Although infiltration alone suffices the purpose in the maxillary quadrants, the same is not possible for the mandibular region due to the thick cortical plates. However, it can serve as a supplemental mode of anaesthesia to Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block.This systematic review and meta-analysis is focused on the success of the supplementary infiltration injection technique (both buccal and lingual) in patients with irreversible pulpitis in human mandibular molars.
