"Loss and Gain," published in 1848, is Newman's first novel and reflects his own experiences and struggles with religious conversion. The novel explores themes of faith, doubt, intellectual struggle, and the search for truth, mirroring Newman's own journey from Anglicanism to Catholicism. In recognition of his contributions to theology and the Church, Newman was elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1879.
