It was believed that the star system was called Addran and that it existed on the far side of the galaxy from Earth's neighborhood. The system had several other planets and moons, some of which could probably support human life. Due to circumstances beyond their control, a human colony crashed on the very large fourth world of the system. After the crash, they discovered they could no longer communicate with their home. They set about setting up what they could to survive on the hot, hostile world. Proving the resilience of the human spirit, they not only survived but flourished and grew. Now, almost a millennium later, they detected communication signals from Earth. Most of the messages were unclear, but what they could determine was that Earth was now the center of an Empire. They also discovered that the Empire remembered the lost colony.
