He was first elected at the 2005 general election and re-elected at the 2010 election. Afriyie was born in Wimbledon, London, the son of an English mother and a father from Ghana. He is the first black Conservative MP. He was educated at Addey and Stanhope School and has a degree in agricultural economics from Wye College (then part of the University of London) which in 2000 became part of Imperial College. He made his maiden speech on 20 May 2005.
