Isaac is a young mage on a dangerous quest. After days of braving the desert, Isaac mistakenly launches a fireball at a pirate ship, and, in the ensuing chaos, soon finds himself at the mercy of the only surviving brigand, a towering hyena known as Zaria. Very soon, the two are locked in an unsteady alliance, facing off against deadly traps, ancient machines, powerful sorcerers, pursuing pirates, and all manner of unfolding conspiracy. As the dangers continue to mount, and the possibilities for escape grow ever slim, both human and hyena discover they have more in common than either thought possible. What starts as rivalry soon becomes friendship, trust, and even love. In the end, their only hope of survival will be each other.
