This small volume contains the substance of the Sprunt Lectures which it was the author's privilege to deliver at Union Seminary, Richmond, Virginia, early in the month of February, 1940. The lectures were given their present form four months later in very special circumstances, when the author was obliged on medical advice to cancel all public engagements. The pages that follow were the children and friends of solitude by the banks of the Delaware. The weeks of communion with them were weeks of terrible happenings for the World for the Church. Autor

John A. Mackay, a theologian and educator, founded a school in Lima, Peru, held chairs on the faculty at San Marcos University, Lima, and served under the auspices of the YMCA. After sixteen years in Latin America, he moved to North America and became President of Princeton Theological Seminary. A leading churchman and the author of many books and articles, over the years Mackay was invited to speak in thirty-five Latin American universities.
