It has a centaur like orbit with a perihelion greater than Jupiter and a semi-major axis less than Neptune. 39P/Oterma underwent a temporary satellite capture by Jupiter in 1936 1938. Such a Jupiter Family Comet is called a quasi-Hilda comet . However, this comet flew through the region near Jupiter over a rather short time, during which the comet did not complete a full revolution orbiting about the planet.
