Like the entire DRC and many African cities, access to sanitation remains a huge equation in the city of Kinshasa: wastewater and waste litter the streets, avenues and homes.Unfortunately, public policies and services related to sanitation remain largely a failure. However, the solutions to clean up Kinshasa do exist: the promotion of urban planning standards, 3R systems (reduce, reuse, recycle), adequate waste management services and the water drainage network, constitute measures likely to contribute to cleaning up Kinshasa and promoting the improvement of the quality of life in Kinshasa, a megacity of more than 17 million inhabitants. This book, enriched with case studies from some cities (Paris, Porto Novo, Ouagadougou) explores the challenges and problems of hygiene and sanitation in the city of Kinshasa and the related solutions. Faced with a low rate of access to decent sanitation, this work calls on governments and citizens to make sanitation a major national issue and to declare a state of sanitation emergency in the DRC.
