Sein Werk, entstanden unter dem Eindruck der Psychoanalyse Freuds, wurde wegen erotischer Freizügigkeiten scharf angegriffen. Neben zahlreichen Romanen und Erzählungen veröffentlichte Lawrence auch Reisebücher, Essays und Lyrik. Er starb 1930 in Vence bei Nizza.
