Pharmacological Activities of Ceratophyllum demersum Linn
Natural products have been an important resource for the
maintenance of life since ages; natural products are becoming
increasingly important as alternative medicines. Medicinal plants
have an important therapeutic role in the treatment of many human
illnesses and have been a source of medicines. There is increasing
demand by patient to use the natural products with gastric ulcer,
diarrhoea and wound healing activities and side effects associated
with allopathic drugs and synthetic compounds, has prompted
research into herbal and natural products. As an alternative to
other approaches, scientific research on plants used in traditional
medicine is receiving growing interest as a way of identifying new
agent and the survey of literature reveals that the medicinal plant
Ceratophyllum demersum is found to use traditionally for cure of
ulcer, diarrhoea and wound. The result of present study indicates
that, Ceratophyllum demersum showed significant antiulcer,
antidiarrhoeal and wound healing activities, which scientifically
support the use of whole plant in traditional medicine to treat
ulcer, diarrhoeal and wound conditions.
