Karl Lagerfeld wurde 1938 in Hamburg geboren. Dreisprachig erzogen, wurde er 1952 in einer französischen Schule aufgenommen. Seine Schullaufbahn brach er ab, als er Ende 1954 den Amateur-Wettbewerb des Internationalen Wollsekretariats IWS gewann. 1955 begann er als Assistent von Pierre Balmain/Paris in der Mode zu arbeiten. Neben seiner internationalen Karriere als Modedesigner und Stylist ist Lagerfeld seit 1987 auch als Fotograf tätig. 1993 erhielt er den Lucky Strike Design Award der Raymond Loewy Foundation, 1996 den Kulturpreis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie, und 2007 den Trustees Award des International Center of Photography in New York. 2011 wurde die erste Ausstellung seiner Photos "The Little Black Jacket" in Tokio eröffnet. Es folgte 2012 eine Welttournee mit den Stationen New York, Taipei, Hongkong, London, Moskau, Sydney, Paris, Berlin, Seoul, Mailand, Dubai, Peking, Shanghai, São Paulo und Singapur. 2013: Ausstellung "The Glory of Water" in Paris.
