The dissolution of the Soviet Union made new forms of
encounters possible between East and West. One of
them was transnational marriages between Russian
women and Western men. The main goal of this book is
to understand the context surrounding these
marriages. We intend to avoid making the immigrants
the single object of study by also rendering the
majority population and society visible and
problematic.

The main question addressed in the book is: How are
borders, rights, relations and positions gendered in
Russian-Norwegian encounters? To address this complex
question we explore several different dimensions by
use of various methods and analytical approaches. We
address the civic or citizenship rights of the
Russian women and their opportunities for
participation in the Norwegian society. We ask how
Russian and Norwegian femininities and masculinities
are spoken into existence and made relevant in
negotiating gendered and national positions. What is
considered legitimate marriages/relationships? How do
Russian-Norwegian marriages challenge what is
considered acceptable?
