Greg Lehey is an independent computer consultant specializing in UNIX. Born in Australia, he was educated in Malaysia and England before studying chemistry in Germany and chemical engineering in England. He has spent his professional career in Germany, where he worked for computer manufacturers such as Univac and Tandem, the German space research agency, nameless software houses, and a large user before deciding to work for himself. In the course of over 20 years in the industry he has performed most jobs you can think of, ranging from kernel support to product marketing, systems programming to operating, processing satellite data to programming gasoline pumps. About the only thing he hasn't done is write commercial software. He is currently engaged in the production of CD-ROMs of ported free software, and this book is one result of his experience in this area. "Dieses Buch, in früheren Auflagen regelmässig zusammen mit den FreeBSD CDs von Walnut Creek vertrieben, hat eine reiche Geschichte: aber was bewährt ist, ist nun in der vierten verbesserten Auflage vom FreeBSD-Experten Greg Lehey und dem Verlagshaus O'Reilly nochmal verbessert und aktualisiert worden. `The Complete FreeBSD' legt nahe, dass ein breites Spektrum vom Neueinsteiger bis zum erfahrenen Unixanwender hier Information und Hilfe findet - und das kann ich nur bestätigen. Das Buch ist hervorragend systematisch angelegt: die ersten Schritte etwa bei der Installation des Systems (Partitionierung) auf einem handelsüblichen PC werden detailliert und leicht verständlich durchexerziert. FreeBSD in seiner aktuellen Version 5.x findet im vorliegenden Buch besonders starke Beachtung. Auch mit geringen Englischkenntnissen macht das schon Spass. Einzelne devices, Schritte nach der Installation und manches mehr macht den Erstkontakt mit FreeBSD ausgesprochen angenehm. `the tools of trade' - tägliches Handwerkszeug bei der Computerarbeit, etwa die Shells, der favorisierte eigene Lieblingseditor und weitere nützliche Werkzeuge - alles Wesentliche wird auf sympathisch kompetente Weise, auch sprachlich leicht zugänglich vorgestellt. So sollte gute Computer-Dokumentation immer sein! Selbstverständlich kommen später die gängigen Schritte zur Einrichtung der grafischen Desktopoberfläche, typische Massnahmen zur Einrichtung von Serverfunktionen. FreeBSD ist Weltmeister in allem, was mit Netzwerken zu tun hat: Mailserver, Webserver, DNS etc laufen alle bestens mit diesem Betriebssystem. Viele Internet-Provider berichten von uptimes jenseits von einem Jahr und länger. Wireless LAN, Bluetooth-Vernetzung, Multimedia und Videoschnitt? IPsec und Tunnelung? Kryptographie, z.B. Verschlüsselung von Emails? Alles gar kein Problem. FreeBSD ist frei verfügbare Software - so wie Linux auch. FreeBSD ist ein klassisches Unix: da gibt es nur kleine Unterschiede (gegenüber Linux), die für Programmierer spürbar werden. Viren, Trojaner und ähnliche Schadsoftware: sowas gibt es unter FreeBSD nicht. Wer wissen will warum: nicht diskutieren, sondern ausprobieren!
