Par Lagerkvist (1891-1974), the author of some thirty-five books, was celebrated in his time for his versatility as a poet, dramatist, essayist, and novelist. He was elected to the Swedish Academy in 1940 and in 1951 was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature.
