Wahrheit und Lüge liegen manchmal ganz nah beieinander. So scheint es auch in der verzwickten Geschichte um Intrigen, Mord und Drogen zu sein, die John McTiernans "Basic" erzählt. Verhörspezialist und ehemaliger Drogenfahnder Tom Hardy (John Travolta) soll das Verschwinden des sadistischen Sergeants Nathan West (Samuel L. Jackson) und vier seiner Männer aufklären, die seit einem Übungseinsatz im Regenwald verschollen sind. Hardy befragt die beiden einzigen Überlebenden und muß aus einer Vielzahl von Erzählungen die Wahrheit herausfinden, was sich als äußerst schwierig erweist: Die Aussagen der Männer widersprechen sich und bringen immer wieder neue Details ans Licht.

Das Duo aus "Pulp Fiction" zieht die Zuschauer noch einmal in seinen Bann: John Travolta macht als charmanter Ermittler im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes eine gute Figur. Samuel L. Jackson überzeugt als angsteinflößender, skrupelloser Sergeant. Fesselnde Rückblenden aus verschiedenen Perspektiven verwirren den Zuschauer, indem sie immer wieder neue Varianten des Geschehens zeigen. Es bleibt spannend bis zur letzten Sekunde. "Basic" ist kein gewöhnlicher Thriller, in dem die Guten die Bösen jagen: Hinter jeder Wahrheit, die Hardy und Osborne entdecken, verbirgt sich eine Lüge. Eine atemberaubende Story mit gelungener Schlußpointe.
