H.G. Wells was a professional writer and journalist who published more than a hundred books, including pioneering science fiction novels, histories, essays and programmes for world regeneration. He was a founding member of numerous movements including Liberty and PEN International - the world's oldest human rights organization - and his Rights of Man laid the groundwork for the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Wells' controversial and progressive views on equality and the shape of a truly developed nation remain directly relevant to our world today. He was, in Bertrand Russell's words, 'an important liberator of thought and action'.

Welt voll Angst
und Schmerz
Ein Schiff sinkt vor der südamerikanischen Küste, elf Monate später wird einer der Schiffbrüchigen gefunden. Er behauptet, sich an nichts erinnern zu können, doch nach seinem Tod finden sich Aufzeichnungen über seine Zeit auf der „Insel des Dr. Moreau“. H. G. Wells veröffentlichte das Buch 1896, es war die große Zeit der Vivisektion. Moreau, ein hochbefähigter Arzt, den eine Pressekampagne aus England vertrieben hat, nimmt auf seiner Tropeninsel an Tieren Operationen vor, um sie zu menschenähnlichen Wesen zu machen. Im Namen der Wissenschaft lässt er eine Welt voller Ängste und Schmerzen entstehen. Wells’ Roman ist ein Schmöker, grell, spannend und ideengeschichtlich ergiebig. Er beleuchtet Triumph und Krise eines mechanistischen Weltbildes und stellt dabei die Frage, ob nicht gerade Mitleid ein materialistischer Irrtum sei.
