Graham Greene, one of the greatest and most popular English writers of the 20th century, is famous for his bestselling novels including Brighton Rock , The Third Man, Our Man in Havana and The Quiet American, many of which have been filmed. His writings often deal with moral issues, and many have exotic settings. Greene gathered materials for these settings during his travels all over the world. A prolific writer, he wrote novels, short stories, biographies, plays and travel books as well as film criticism.

Mit Graham Greene in Brighton,
am „Abgrund des Lebens“
Die Liebe ist kein Zuckerschlecken, in diesem frühen Roman von Graham Greene, 1938, der im Original „Brighton Rock“ heißt. In zwei Wochen wird eine Neuverfilmung bei uns ins Kino kommen, mit Sam Riley und Helen Mirren, dazu wurde der Roman nun bei dtv wieder herausgebracht.
Die Liebe eines kleinen windigen Gaunerbosses, Pinkie Brown, der mit seinen Leuten kleine Läden und Wettbuchhalter im Seebad Brighton kontrolliert, ein mühseliges Geschäft, das einen unentwegt in Bewegung hält, von Missgunst und Misstrauen getrieben, ein trostloser Überlebenskampf, der einen zwingt, energisch und großspurig aufzutreten – obwohl ziemlich klar ist, man hat keine Chance gegen den Konkurrenten, den Boss Colleoni, der feudal und cool im Hotel Cosmopolitan residiert.
Siebzehn Jahre alt ist Pinkie, und der Spaßbetrieb an den Piers widert ihn an, diese stumpfsinnige, schäbige Jahrmarktsglückseligkeit, diese Kleinbürger-Perspektivlosigkeit. Um den Mord an einem Verräter zu kaschieren, sind schnell weitere Morde fällig, und eine der Zeuginnen, die Bedienung Rose, die sogar noch jünger ist als er, wird Pinkie sogar heiraten, damit sie nicht gegen ihn aussagen könnte. So sieht das aus mit seiner Liebe, mit seinem Umgang mit dem Sakrament der Ehe.
Es ist die lost generation der Zwischenkriegszeit, die Graham Greene präsentiert, die aufs Glück nicht mehr hoffen mag und – ihre katholische Erziehung, ihre pathetischen Visionen und Obsessionen entschlossen umfunktionierend – die Sünde als ihre Erfüllung wählen. Die Gläubigen sind es, die wirklich das Böse tun, und das mit Lust. „Auf die Seite des Bösen konnte man mit einem Schlag gelangen, in einem Augenblick der Verzweiflung oder der Leidenschaft, aber während eines langen Lebens trieben einen die Schutzengel des Guten erbarmungslos zur Krippe hin, zum ,seligen Tod‘.“
Kein Zuckerschlecken, das Leben, die Liebe. Brighton Rock heißen die billigen Zuckerstangen, die Pinkie und Rose in ihrer Hochzeitsnacht konsumieren.
