Baird T. Spalding (1857-1953) wurde in England geboren und zog mit vier Jahren mit seinen Eltern nach Indien. Mit siebzehn ging er für zwei Jahre nach Kalifornien und anschließend nach Heidelberg, wo er weitere acht Jahre studierte. Seine Studien der Archäologie schloß er in Berkeley und Stanford, Kalifornien, ab. Nach seiner Forschungsreise in den Fernen Osten 1894 begann er mit der Aufzeichnung seiner Erlebnisse in Indien und im Himalaya, die im Freundes- und Bekanntenkreis schnell beliebte Lektüre waren. Nachdem ihn Cecil B. DeMille als technischen Berater für seinen Monumentalfilm 'König der Könige' (1927) engagiert hatte, lag seine schriftstellerische Tätigkeit brach; 1935 nahm er diese wieder auf. Den letzten Teil seines Lebens verbrachte er damit, als Ingenieur Feldforschung für Minenunternehmen zu betreiben.
