Traditionally, osseous surgery has been performed by either manual or motor-driven instruments. However, both these methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. Recently, a novel approach using Piezoelectric device was first used by oral and maxillofacial surgeons for osteotomies. Piezosurgery uses modulated ultrasonic vibration to allow controlled cutting of bony structures. Piezoelectric surgery is a minimally invasive technique that lessens the risk of damage to surrounding soft tissues and important structures such as nerves, vessels, and mucosa. It also reduces damage to osteocytes and permits good survival of bony cells during harvesting of bone. This book provides comprehensive review about the wide range of application of this novel technique, its advantages and disadvantages in the field of periodontics and implantology.
