Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Region: Russland, Länder der ehemal. Sowjetunion, Note: 1.0, Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), Veranstaltung: Forschungscolloquium "Migration und Minderheiten" , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: National identity is a creation of particular interactional, historical, political and linguistic circumstances. How this identity is being preserved depends on clear maintenance of ethnic boundary. Ethnic relations and boundary constructions in plural societies are not about strangers but adjacent and familiar "others". Key is here not cultural differences, but rather ascription: how people identify themselves and are identified by outsiders. To reach this objective it is necessary to strengthen the ethnic boundary. In the case shown in the following approach this leads through fighting for prestige goods, laying emphasis on a specific national cultural memory, preservation of the official status of the Ukrainian language and concentration on particular political aims.
